During Summer of 2018, I completed my field session class for my Computer Science degree at the Colorado School of Mines. This class entails working with a team on a programming project for 6 weeks - a project that is given by a client and will be delivered at the end of the class.

My project was to create an online ride requesting system and user management system for Digger Drive - Colorado School of Mine's safe ride service. We worked hard to create a product that fits all of the client's needs - and after meeting those needs, we deployed the site to the school's servers.

The project had many different challenges - one of the biggest being that none of us in our group had extensive experience building a web application - most of our experience was creating websites. In addition, the authentication system that the client wanted us to use - Shibboleth, was difficult and often frustrating to set up. One of the biggest things we learned during the process was how important it was to start working with outside parties that you need things from quickly. We had to work with CCIT (the IT department at Mines) on many different things on our project, including our SSL certificate, Shibboleth authentication, and hosting. Although they did their best to respond and complete tasks that we needed quickly, we hadn't started working with them at the very beginning so it was tight to finish our project on time.
